NEW DELHI: From Veena Malik's nude ISI photo shoot, Vidya Balan's dare bare act in 'The Dirty Picture' to the political storm caused by 'Dam 999', Bollywood celebrities kept their date with controversies in 2011.

Veena, who shot to fame in India with her antics in 'Bigg Boss' last year, returned to the country for another reality show where she will be seen hunting her 'Mr Right' on the idiot box.

The starlet made her return in style by posing nude with an ISI tattoo on the cover of FHM magazine in India but the move caused so much furor on the both sides of the border that Veena backtracked, accusing the editors of morphing her photo. She also sued the magazine for Rs 10 crore.

As if that was not enough, the actress created further headlines by disappearing during the shoot of a film, only to resurface later. The actress later claimed that she cut off from the world to recuperate from the stress caused by the nude photo scandal.

Vidya Balan's portrayal of Southern sex siren Silk Smitha brought both critical acclaim and controversies for the actress, who shed her inhibitions to play the character in body and soul.

The film also did not go down well with many puritans, who felt that it crossed the conventional limit thanks to the liberal use of innuendos and Balan's cleavage baring act.

Debutant director Sohan Roy's 'Dam 999' may have found a place in the Oscars this year by getting into the long list of best song, best score and the best picture but the film will be best remembered for causing a political storm in Kerala and Tamil Nadu after being accused of stoking the sensitive Mullaperiyar dam issue. The film has been banned in Tamil Nadu.

Aishwarya Rai's pregnancy may have brought happiness in Bachchan family but it left director Madhur Bhandarkar a very bitter man as his ambitious project 'Heroine' was stalled.

Bhandarkar went public with his disappointment. He claimed that Aishwarya did not inform him and it was impossible to shoot the film with her. Aishwarya in her turn returned the signed amount and went the legal way to ensure that her name is not dragged further in the controversy. Bhandarkar later resumed the shooting of the film with Kareena as the lead.

Amitabh Bachchan's decision to shun IIFA in Sri Lanka amid protests by Tamil film industry saw the actor being removed as the brand ambassador of the award show after 10-years. His film 'Aarakshan', directed by Prakash Jha was embroiled in caste controversy. The multi-starrer film was banned in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab on certain objections from the SC, ST, BC communities. Later the ban was lifted from these states but the controversy affected the business of the film.

While many international stars were India bound this year, the capital saw some of the high profile concerts being scrapped at the last minute.
