New London venue set to open in time for 2012 Olympics

A new arts and entertainment venue, London's Pleasure Gardens, is set to open on June 1, 2012.

The 40,000 capacity space on Pontoon Dock in East London's Royal Docks, will provide a "playground for tourists and Londoners" and "celebrate art and culture".

Opening on the Queen's Jubilee Weekend, the three year project has been coordinated by the people behind the Shangri-La area at Glastonbury Festival - pictured above - with help from The Arts Council.

The space will pay homage to London's historic pleasure gardens and, as well as hosting gigs, will offer "high art to sub-culture and entertainment". Deborah Armstrong, the Creative Director of London's Pleasure Gardens said:
Our aim is to help London to deliver on the promise to use the Olympics as a chance to showcase British cultural, as well as sporting, talent on a global platform. We will champion local talent and celebrate the incredible melting pot of creativity that is alive and kicking in London every day.

She added: "London's Pleasure Gardens will bring together real talents across music, art, food, fashion and film, give them a spiritual and physical home, whilst showcasing the very best of London's creative communities to the world."
