Sharjah Water Festival attracts more than 180,000 visitors

Curtains came down on an eventful and action-packed Sharjah Water Festival 2011 Friday night amid colourful fireworks and much excitement. Hosted by the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority for the fifth consecutive year, the Water Festival attracted more than 180,000 visitors.

The 10-day extravaganza of fun and games got off to a grand start on December 14 at Al Majaz Park and the Khalid Lagoon under the guidance of HH Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qassimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah and the patronage of HH Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Bin Sultan Al Qassimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah.

The SWF received overwhelming response with waves of fun enveloping the whole of Sharjah for ten days. The sheer, wholesome entertainment offered by various international shows and games targeted the whole family and attracted thousands of residents from across the country as well as foreign tourists.

As in the past, the eagerly awaited F1H20 Powerboat World Championship 2011 on December 15 and 16 formed the high point. of the annual festival. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qassimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler crowned the champions. Ahmed Al Hameli of Team Abu Dhabi stood first for the second consecutive year. His team mate Thani Al Qamzi stood second while Philipe Chiappe from China got the third position. Italian Alex Carella from the Qatar team was adjudged the World Champion for the F1H2O Powerboat World Championship. The American Jay Price from the same team stood second and Thani Al Qamzi from team Abu Dhabi came third. Sheikh Sultan also crowned the champions of the F4S Powerboat Championship recently added to the race.

Commenting on the successful SWF, SCTDA Director General Mohamed Ali Al Noman said that every year new shows and more interesting features were being added to the festival. Internationally acclaimed shows like the Circus on Ice, being presented for the first time in the UAE and the region, had attracted thousands of visitors every day. The unique Circus on Ice presented breathtaking acrobatic feats and skating on ice and was attended daily by more than 10,000.

On hosting the F1H2O Powerboat World Championship 2011, the Grand Prix of Sharjah, Al Noman said, "hosting the Championship for the 12th consecutive year proves that Sharjah is ideally suited and equipped to host such world-class events. With its strategic location, modern infrastructure and logistics, the emirate is capable of hosting sports and entertainment events as well as international meetings and conferences."

He emphasized that the success of the SWF and Sharjah Grand Prix all these years is thanks to the encouragement of HH Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah and the continuous support of HH Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qassimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah. It has helped us promote the emirate at national and international levels.

Al Noman thanked all the private players, government departments, sponsors and partners for their role in the success of the festival. While Etisalat is the main sponsor, other sponsors include Sahara Center, Mega Mall, Al Zahra Private Hospital, Bukhatir Group, Panasonic, Corniche Al Buhaira Hotel and Hotel Radisson Blu.

Media sponsors include the Sharjah Media Corporation, Al Khaleej, Channel Four and Gulf News. The partners include Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority, Sharjah Public Works Department, Sharjah Police, Sharjah Municipality, and Sharjah Customs. The official airline is Air Arabia. Al Noman also thanked local and international media for their support and covering all the events and activities during the past ten days.

The Sharjah Water Festival 2011 included more than 20 shows, the main event being The Circus on Ice. The Mouj Ice Island included Irish Dance Show presented by Glendalough the longest established Irish dance troupe. Yo Yo People presented shows with bouncy balls, hula-hoops and unicycling. The Colourful Boxes was another amazing show with amazing performances and fantastic jugglery and breathtaking acrobats.

Other events included Pets Magic, water games, sand games, artistic shows, Percussion show, Comic show, face painting, colourful contests and much more. Al Majaz Park had also a Heritage area with traditional food and Emirati folk shows entertaining the audience.

The Sharjah Water Festival is organized every year in December along with the F1 H2O Powerboat World Championship, Grand Prix of Sharjah. The festival is promoted widely in all media locally, regionally and internationally. Regional and international media are invited to cover the festival and visit Sharjah in order to boost the tourism and economic development in the emirate.
