An aide for GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum says she misspoke in a television interview Monday when she referred to President Obama having "radical Islamic policies."
Santorum's press secretary, Alice Stewart, was defending comments Santorum made about the president over the weekend and in the interview aired on MSNBC, she addressed critics who accused the GOP candidate of swiping at President Obama's religious beliefs.
"He wasn't questioning the president's character, he wasn't questioning the president's religion," Stewart said. "As he's said, as he has said in a statement, he was talking about radical environmentalism. There is a type of theological secularism when it comes to the global warmness in this country, that's what he was referring to. He was referring to the president's policies in terms of the radical Islamic policies the president has, specifically in terms of the energy exploration."
Stewart said she called MSNBC immediately after the interview to say she misspoke and that she meant to say environmental policies, not Islamic policies.
"I was referring to Obama's radical environmental policies and on one reference, I accidentally said radical 'Islamic' policies," Stewart said in an email to Fox News. "I misspoke and I regret it."
Santorum told a group in Ohio that the president's policies aren't focused on them, their jobs or the Bible and his campaign has been forced to address the comments since. "It's not about you. It's not about you. It's not about your quality of life. it's not about your jobs," Santorum told the Ohio Christian Freedom Alliance on Saturday. "It's about some phony ideal; some phony theology. Oh, not a theology based on the Bible, a different theology, but no less a theology."
Stewart, who previously worked as Rep. Michele Bachmann's (R-Minn.) press secretary, joined the Santorum campaign after Bachmann dropped out of the race. She was clarifying Santorum's Ohio comments in Monday's interview.
