Embracing music to calm menopausal blues


CHANDIGARH: Any change starts from within, and this has been realized by a few women who had been feeling low after menopause. Moving a step forward after attending different sessions by doctors, some of them have devised their own means and formed a small group to combat post menopause depression. This includes cultivation of hobbies like learning harmonium and painting, among others.

Varinder Kaur, a resident of Phase VII in Mohali, finds her happiness in the play notes of harmonium. In her late 50s, Varinder had been too stressed out lately. She visited doctors and had adhered to the suggestions, but what ultimately made a difference was her determination to fight the problem within.

"I had been reading a lot on women health and watching health shows. However, what worked for me was talking the problem out," she said. Varinder took to music which soothed her. Finding kitty as an opportunity to spread a word on mid-life crisis, she has extended her network. "Instead of talking about new sarees or jewellery we discuss how to prevent diseases specific to woman."

For Abha Singh, 40, a school teacher here, fabric painting closes her mind to problems. However, as women take their health too casually, she feels it becomes tough to convince and reach out. "But whenever we can snatch few minutes during a recess in the school, we talk about lifestyle changes," said Abha.

Arranging a talk on women health issues keeps Ramitha Chhabra mentally fit. In her 60s, Chhabra, who is based in Mohali, feels that this makes her forget about her ache in the joints. "Involving women to participate in prevention of diseases distresses me. Had I known the significance of calcium at an appropriate age, I would not have suffered joint pains after menopause. So I am working towards educating women on such issues," she said.

Dr Priti Arun, psychiatrist at Government Medical College and Hospital, has been invited by these women to deliver a talk on depression after menopause. "Besides medicines, lifestyle changes are necessary. This includes regular physical exercise, meditation, balanced diet, timely sleep and recreational activities."
