Aqeel to debut as music director

The term 'celebrity DJ' is one that sits easily on Aqeel Ali's shoulders. As one of the best known names on the circuit (his latest gigs included the Saif-Kareena wedding in October last year and the party last month), he has been everywhere and seen all that most people can only hope to.
And his journeys continue. He heads out for an Australian tour in April and the US tour in September. He is also making his debut in Bollywood as a music director for Ameesha Patel's upcoming debut production, Desi Magic. "I'm composing four tracks for Ameesha's film," he says with pride.
That being said, he's supposed to be the only DJ to have performed at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, twice while representing India. But he prefers to be as humble about the achievement as about playing for his celebrity clients. "They're just a cool bunch of people enjoying and having fun while listening to some good music," he says nonchalantly.
He's glad that EDM (electronic dance music) is big on the music scene right now and that international DJs are making frequent trips to India. He says, "I'm glad there are so many foreign artists coming here and playing their music."
Touring across the world has kept him busy and he admits that the support of his family has helped his career soar. "Their support means a lot. I'm always travelling. For 150-odd days in a year, I'm out of the country, but my family has been quite understanding about it. So when I am home, I make it a point to spend all my time with them."
And what if he wasn't a world-class spinner, what would he be? Pat comes the reply: "A pilot." Makes sense for this multitalented man who also happens to be a man who's passionate about creating music venues for those who love entertainment in general and clubbing in particular. In fact, the emphasis on his ventures veer towards creating options for those seeking a luxury option and lifestyle clubbing.
But hasn't the recession taken the shine off that passion of his considering footfalls aren't as good with austerity drives and what not and even the rich getting conscious about spending on a night out? He admits, "It's true. People are not really spending a lot during a night out. They weren't as alert during the first 'recession' in 2008, but people are becoming smarter now."
Does he fancy himself as an actor someday? Not for now, it seems. "I'm good doing what I do. I'll do just that for now," he shoots back. Touche!
