13 stab wounds blamed in death

Preliminary autopsy results indicate Harold Lee Montgomery, 39, died of 13 stab wounds and not smoke inhalation. Montgomery’s body was found in a burning motel room New Year’s Day just after 7 a.m. and investigators began looking for clues that might help to identify the perpetrator.

According to Lt. Mark Gibson of the Cleveland Police Department Criminal Investigations Division, Russell Brown, 35, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and aggravated arson.

Brown and Montgomery had reportedly celebrated New Year’s at Brown’s apartment the night before, leaving to get alcohol and drugs, then a motel room at Days Inn located on Georgetown Road. The two men were also celebrating Brown’s birthday, which was New Year’s Eve.

The Cleveland Fire Department was notified of a fire at the motel and when firefighters arrived they dragged Montgomery out of the burning room and discovered he was deceased.

Further investigation revealed he had been stabbed.

After learning Brown could be a possible suspect in the alleged murder, detectives released information about his identifying characteristics and about the car he was apparently driving.

Montgomery’s 1995 Volkswagen Cabriolet was missing from the motel parking lot, according to early reports.

Meanwhile, as investigators claimed Brown as a “person of interest” in the alleged homicide, Detective Stacy Smith issued a warrant for his arrest in connection with the reported arson fire at the motel.

Brown was taken into custody early Monday by officer Bill Parks of the Cleveland Police Department.

After further investigation, detectives learned the men had known each other since childhood and met on occasion for sexual relations, according to reports.

Montgomery’s body was taken to Knoxville for autopsy and Gibson released the preliminary information today as well as stating Montgomery’s vehicle was recovered in Niota.

“There was no indication of smoke inhalation and it’s been determined he (Montgomery) died as the result of multiple-stab wounds to the neck, mouth and upper torso,” Gibson said today.

During an initial appearance in Bradley County General Sessions Court earlier this week, two family members of Montgomery’s were arrested and charged after reportedly disrupting court proceedings.

Jimmy Robert Rogers Jr., 22, and Aaron Michael Sadler, 33, were charged by Bradley County Sheriff’s Office Court Security officers after they allegedly shouted and attempted to go across a railing at the front of Judge Sheridan Randolph’s courtroom, according to a statement from Bob Gault, media relations coordinator for BCSO.

Both were arraigned in Bradley County General Sessions Court Wednesday and are scheduled to report back Jan. 26, according to Court Clerk officials.
