After hosting music in a backyard in Ryde in Sydney’s north for the past eight months, suburban music initiative The Gate
is on the move. Organisers Carly and Joe Hardy have paired up with
Epping coffee joint Pablo & Rusty’s for a series of experimental
music performances, beginning with a launch by Melbourne’s Wintercoats
and Sydney’s Cleptoclectics and Loopsnake this Saturday (April 2),
complete with live visuals and projected visual art and film loops in an
adjoining room. Deciding that hosting music in a single backyard space
had a limited shelf-life, The Gate has also announced a new series of
pop-up concerts in various backyards. Dubbed “No Fixed Address”, the
series will kick off on April 16 with performances by ambient pop duo
Albatross and Melbourne artists Tim Shiel (Faux Pas) and Naminé. To find
out the location RSVP via The Gate’s website.
– With everyone transfixed on the doom and gloom following Raval’s closure, an unheralded night of free music has popped up in the backstreets of Surry Hills. Each Wednesday, colourful publican Doris Goddard plays host to a night of “nu-folk/alt-country/melodramatic pop” at the Hotel Hollywood. Inspired by Communion in the UK, the night has already seen performances by the likes of Georgia Fair, Fergus Brown, Passenger and Lanie Lane. Indie-folk duo The Falls are the Hollywood’s latest artist-in-residence, kicking off a month-long residency tomorrow night (March 30).
