Mumbai, Feb. 2 -- Apart from being an actor, Akshay Kumar is a businessman as well. Not only did he realise the potential of co-producing his own movies, but he has also floated his production company, Grazing Goat Pictures (GGP), which will venture into regional cinema this year.
The company will soon announce two Marathi films and one Bengali film all set to release in 2012. Incidentally, Akshay will be the first Bollywood actor to tap into the potential of regional markets where only corporate companies have reigned. He confirms, "Yes it is very exciting to venture into regional cinema."
Ashvini Yardi, CEO, GGP, adds, "We wanted to work in regional markets as there are lot of films there that can be worked differently." The first Marathi film will be directed by National Award-winning director Rajiv Patil, while scripts for the second Marathi film and the Bengali one are being shortlisted. Ashvini adds that Grazing Goat wants to do quality cinema and are encouraging new talent with the emphasis on good scripts.
Answering why the production house has not yet dabbled in Punjabi films considering that Akshay is a Punjabi, Ashvini explains, "Each market offers different cinema depending on the audience. Marathi and Bangla markets are similar." The company eventually plans to get into the Punjabi and South Indian market.
Meanwhile, GGP's first Hindi production, OMG (Oh My God), started its shoot last week in Mumbai. It is an adaptation of actor Paresh Rawal's critically acclaimed and controversial Krishan Vs Kanhaiya and will have Paresh in the lead. As for the role of God, "many popular names and big stars are being considered. The subject is a religious satire," says Ashvini. Ask if Akshay will don the avatar, and she says, "We are still trying to work out his dates."
