Corporatisation has changed fashion industry: Neeta Lulla

It's that time of the year when style and beauty meet in a heady mix that's hard to ignore.

Yes, it's time for the Lakme Fashion Week and using the symbol of divine feminine energy - Radha - to inspire her collection is noted designer Neeta Lulla. Tell the designer this is ironical because at this very moment in India, crimes against women are increasing and she says, "I am symbolising through fashion what the society should focus towards - mainly respect for women. In an emerging and young nation like ours where modernisation is the core focus why are we regressing on the aspect of respect to women or still committing female foeticide when today, women are on the forefront of every successful environment?"

Changing fashion

In the many years that Neeta's been in the industry, ask how she thinks fashion and the fashion industry has evolved and she says, "Corporatisation has changed a lot of things. The advent of stores retailing western garments and the influx of brands into the country make it easy to buy garments and accessories and style a look unlike earlier when everything was custom made." As she's on the topic of designer labels, ask her what is stopping one of our lines from becoming the next DKNY, Tommy, Versace and she says, "Backend infrastructure - financial aid through corporates who believe in the business - or focus of young design students into areas of interest and expertise which will help the industry get focused technical aide is missing in the fashion sector!"

Personal fav

With the fashion week on, lots of attires in various styles will be displayed.. But what is Neeta's personal fav? "According to me the saree undoubtedly suits Indian body type the best, and it is also my personal favourite," she says. And quiz her if designers are too dependent on Bollywood film stars to get eyeballs for their collections, she remains politically correct saying, "It's happening and I think it is a matter of personal choice and concept." Speaking more about her collection, Neeta says, "It is a youthful and colourful collection focused at festive wear or a young bride. It is teamed with jewellery specially done by Forever Jewellery in pure 22 carat gold, with pink tourmalines nestled in glistening kundan as they flirt with vivid meenakari. A feisty fusion of jadau, luxuriant emeralds and voluptuous pearls highlight an inimitable glamour quotient. Prussian blue meenakari with peacock motifs inspired by Radha's Krishna as well as kangans, haath paunchas and baju bandhs adorned with uncut diamonds and precious stones set in classic floral patterns are also seen in the collection."
