Deepika Govind's Pop Patola collection at LFW

Bangalore designer Deepika Govind gives a new spin to traditional Indian crafts and textiles this year.

Bangalore based designer Deepika Govind is planning to present an interesting range of ensembles for the 2012 edition of Lakme Fashion Week, which will be taking place in Mumbai in August .

Deepika, who is known for work that is geared at promoting the revival of traditional Indian crafts and textiles, is working with patola this time. Her latest collection, Pop Patola follows her design philosophy as she re-visits the weaving tradition of Gujarat on Indian Textile Day, August 5.

Deepika's collection this season is a tribute to the extraordinary weaving tradition of the Patola from Patan, Gujarat; albeit with a tongue-in-cheek Pop Art interpretation. Her design sensibility is as much driven by the process of design as the final product. In 'Pop Patola', culture blends with style and modern-day icons.

Speaking about her new collection, Deepika has this statement to make... "Pop Patola spells a new thought and dimension to my design direction. It is lively, happy, effervescent, with one foot in the mould of tradition, and the other, firmly rooted in the present."

The collection includes saturated bright colours, artful fabric manipulation, revolutionary ethnic designs and haute generic fusing. Layers, both mock and real, abound in each piece. Pop designs, both woven and printed, show up on the canvas of the traditional Patola. Draped constructions form the foundation of the silhouettes and the collection includes short dresses, layered skirts, peplum blouses, round hemmed dresses, a unique edition of dhoti trousers, high-waisted, wide legged trousers, volume based tunics and sarees, in a melange of silk textiles and in many colours.
