Burglars target Parcel Wagon of super fast trains to steal expensive sarees

JAIPUR: The trains already had the menace by drugging gangs who were involved in looting valuables and baggage of the passengers is now facing another threat. There has been a significant sudden rise in cases in which expensive courier packets have been stolen from super fast trains run by the north western railways (NWR).

The government railway police (GRP) is concerned as at least seven cases took place in last two months in various trains in Jaipur in which unknown burglars decamped with courier packets worth Rs 40 lakhs containing expensive sarees. A cargo firm in Jaipur has registered a case at GRP police station, Jaipur in which it stated that its 20 courier packets having expensive sarees were stolen from the parcel wagon of Jaipur Banda train. The GRP, Jaipur is also confused over investigations since these packets were stolen between Varodara Junction and Mehsana railway stations.

"We have also intimated GRP, Varodara and Mehsana to help us in the investigations. The cargo firm has its office in Jaipur thus they have lodged their case here, but the crime took place there thus they need to investigate the case," said an officer with the GRP police, Jaipur. However the team of GRP when visited the parcel wagon of the train they were stunned that a part of the van was cut from the general coach side through which the burglars entered into the parcel wagon.

"This parcel wagon usually remains covered and locked. It opened only at the stations where various parcels are to be delivered to railway stations based parcel offices," said an officer from the parcel office of Jaipur railway station. The GRP officials have not ruled out the connivance of the railway staff into the matter and will also investigate if in these thefts any officials of the railway protection force or onboard staff are responsible.

Many traders import Sarees from various parts of the state and they are in shock after sudden rise in these incidents. "Railway parcel booking is considered as the safest mode to get your commodity. It is cheaper and faster. But in past one month at least seven such incidents have taken place," said Ghanshyam Das, of a cargo company whose 10 packets were lost.
