Varanasi weavers to showcase city's cultural heritage at Delhi Haat

LUCKNOW: In order to provide support to the handloom weavers in Varanasi region, ministry of textiles has decided to hold a special 'Varanasi Weavers' Haat at the well known marketing place Delhi Haat from October 16 to 31. Marketing for these weavers has always been a concern. The upcoming event at Delhi Haat will give the weavers and artisans a prominent marketing platform where they can display and sale their products.

To empower handloom weavers and build their capacity to enhance competitiveness of their products in the domestic as well as global market in a sustainable and reliant manner, the Government of India (GoI) has taken up various developmental and welfare programmes.

The special 'Banaras Weavers' Haat will have 162 stalls put up by different individuals and societies from Varanasi. As per Weavers Service Centre (WSC) officials, Benarasi brocade, zari, zamdani, sarees and furnishing materials of silk will be a specialty. The WSC provides technical and marketing assistance to weavers. The weavers seeking participation should submit their application at the ESC office latest by August 14.

The handloom products of Varanasi have got wide recognition all over the country and abroad for their highly artistic design, colour combination, superior craftsmanship and long durability. Till the 14th century, the region specialised in cotton weaving but it gradually switched to silk weaving. For the last few centuries, the Varanasi weavers have specialised in brocade weaving. The main product of Banaras is saree but recently there has been a thrust towards product diversification and weavers have ventured into making stoles, scarves, mats, made-ups like curtain, cushion covers, table cover and napkins and others.
